The Journal of Automata, Languages and Combinatorics is a forum for research in all areas of the field, from theory to applications and relations to other subjects. It is the successor of the Journal of Information Processing and Cybernetics / Elektronische Informationsverarbeitung und Kybernetik.

For 20 years, from 1996 until 2015, it has been edited under the present name at Fakultät für Informatik, Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Dassow.

Since the year 2016, the journal has been published by Institut für Informatik, Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen by Prof. Dr. Markus Holzer and Prof. Dr. Martin Kutrib.
